DAKAR / RABAT — In an unprecedented move that has sent shockwaves through the world of football, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially stripped Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title. In a stunning administrative reversal, the trophy has been awarded to the host nation, Morocco, two months after the final whistle blew.
The decision, finalized on March 17, 2026, stems from a chaotic period during the final played on January 18. With the match deadlocked at 0-0 in stoppage time, Senegal’s players walked off the pitch in a 15-minute protest against a controversial penalty awarded to Morocco. Though they eventually returned and went on to win 1–0 in extra time, CAF’s Appeal Board has now ruled the mid-match walk-off constituted a formal forfeit.
The Ruling: A 3-0 “Administrative” Defeat
CAF invoked Articles 82 and 84 of its tournament regulations, which state that any team leaving the field “without the authorization of the referee” is considered to have lost the match.
“The Senegal National Team is declared to have forfeited the Final Match… with the result recorded as 3–0 in favor of Morocco,” the CAF statement read.
The ruling effectively erases the on-field heroics of Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who had famously saved Brahim Diaz’s “Panenka” penalty attempt once play resumed, and the subsequent winning goal scored by Pape Gueye.
Senegal Strikes Back
The Senegalese government and the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) have reacted with fury, labeling the move an “administrative robbery” and an “unacceptable attack on the fundamental rights” of their nation.
-
Corruption Allegations: The Senegalese government has formally requested an independent international investigation into “suspicions of corruption” within CAF’s governing bodies.
-
Defiant Parade: In a bold act of protest, Senegal plans to parade the AFCON trophy before their friendly match against Peru in Paris this Saturday, March 28, 2026, refusing to physically relinquish the silverware.
-
CAS Appeal: On March 25, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed it had registered an official appeal from Senegal to set aside the CAF decision and reinstate the “Teranga Lions” as champions.
A Divided Continent
The decision has polarized fans across Africa. While Moroccan supporters celebrate their first continental title since 1976, critics argue that changing a result months after a trophy was lifted “discredits African soccer as a whole.” FIFA President Gianni Infantino has previously described the scenes in Rabat as “unacceptable,” though FIFA has yet to intervene in the specific ruling.
The battle for the 2025 crown now moves from the grass of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium to the courtrooms of Lausanne, Switzerland. A final verdict from CAS is expected within the coming months.
